From 'comfort books' to 'healing fantasy': When fantasy becomes your safe place
We think of 'comfort books' as books that make us feel good. Books that offer comfort and sometimes even create a feeling of safety. If we were to compare them to a warm blanket on a cold winter day, then 'healing fantasy' is the warm mug, filled with our favourite drink, that we hold in our hands.
The beauty of reading is not only about escaping from your daily life and your worries. You return with a lighter feeling. A better feeling. (Unless, of course, something terrible happened to your favourite character . . .). You could call it a mini vacation.
But what is better than a vacation that does not only make you feel good? A vacation that touches something inside you and gently helps you heal.
Stories that do not only let you travel without your baggage, but also help you understand your own emotions better, without having to say them out loud.
There are as many stories as there are feelings, and when you find the one that belongs to you, you may never let it go.
And yes, during winter you still need that blanket and that warm mug. But your book . . . your book completes the whole picture.
