Why broken characters make us feel whole again . . .
Reading about characters who find themselves in another world actually gives you the feeling that if that is possible, perhaps it is also possible for you to feel better.
I don't know which explanation I find most fitting, or logical, perhaps it's a bit of both.
On one hand, I think it helps to read that someone else is going through similar feelings, or something close to them.
On the other hand, while reading, you get the conviction that if he/she goes through that, and keeps going, it might be possible for you to do the same.
What remains difficult, regardless of the world you find yourself in, is that what you feel is not visible to the outside world, and usually cannot be explained in words either—words that fall short of describing your feelings.
Wouldn't it be beautiful if, just like the Japanese do with broken crockery, you could encase the healed pieces of yourself in gold?
Showing the world: Look! I was broken. The pieces I put back together have made me more beautiful. Stronger.
